Majorette Saab 900 Turbo: The One and Only 900 Casting We Ever Got
Happy Halloween! Continuing where we left off from our discussion about the Majorette Volvo 245, there was also another iconic Swedish car produced around the same time: The Saab 900 Turbo. Also debuting in the Majorette 200 Series, the Saab Turbo, as it was officially named under Majorette, was produced from 1982 to 1988. It was the 284th car in the 200 Series as well.
Like the Volvo 245, the 900 saw four different color variations as well, and luckily enough, I have all four! They were available in black, silver, blue, and green. All examples have the word "Turbo" printed on the side.
A very rare example was produced in yellow, but that model is incredibly hard to find, and likely fetches high prices on the collector's market.
The Saab Turbo also has a unique feature, having the ability to open its doors. I didn't want to damage any of my cars, so I did not demonstrate this feature in the photos below.
In the 1980s, the 900 Turbo was catching on as a reliable and sporty alternative car to the BMW 3-Series or Volvo 242 Turbo of its time. Saab had also revolutionized turbocharged vehicles, so it makes sense why these Majorette models all feature "Turbo" on the side. It was the 1980s after all, so if you weren't putting turbos on everything, you weren't down with the times!
Coincidentally, Majorette to date has been the only brand to produce a 900 in 1/64 scale. This made me pretty excited, after learning that Matchbox or Hot Wheels didn't produce one. I know Matchbox had previously made the 9000 and Sonett, but I was shocked that Hot Wheels hadn't made a 900 Turbo, considering its popularity during the '80s.
Like the Volvo 245, Majorette really knocked this casting out of the park. The Combi Coupe body style, especially in the five door variation, was a blessing in itself to get, and I'm glad to have all four colors. Like the 245, I really hope this gets reissued, but I'm not so sure if we'll have that luck, since we haven't seen a Saab diecast vehicle since the Matchbox 9000. But, one can hope...
