Abandoned Volvos in Yonkers, New York

For context, I spent the early part of my Spring 2023 semester in New York at Manhattan College, which was ironically located in the Bronx. I ended up quickly returning home to Rhode Island, as I would've had to retake a bunch of courses I had already taken at my previous school, URI.

With that being said, I had a bunch of spare time to explore the surrounding areas around the Bronx and beyond it, in this case, Yonkers. I didn't find too many old Volvos during this time, but I found plenty of classic street parked beaters, which you can read about in my main car blog entry here

While out on one of my walks, I happened upon a green BMW 2002 parked behind a chain link fence. When I was finished taking pictures of the 2002, I looked beyond the car, and noticed that there was a bit more in the lot than I noticed. In addition to the green 2002, there was another gray 2002, a Volkswagen Golf Mk. I, a modern BMW 3-Series E46, and two classic Volvos! Here is what looks to be a 1982 (or '83) Volvo 244 and a P1800 ES Estate. We'll discuss the 244 below, but let's quickly talk about that P1800 ES.

The P1800 ES was only available for two years, 1972 and 1973. Because the car was parked far away from me, and slightly obscured by a tarp, I couldn't find out too many details about the car, but my guess is that it is most likely a '72. If anyone thinks they know the year, let us know in the comments.

Here is a zoomed in picture of the 240. Out of all the cars stashed in this lot, this one was probably one of the most savable. The other was the green BMW 2002 I mentioned earlier. Although it has a missing grille, I'm sure one could be easily sourced.

I believe this to be a 1982 or '83 model year 240. Evidence points to the lack of an air dam, and the early style bumpers. 1984 would see the addition of the air dam under the front bumper, and large bumpers overall. If this Volvo is completely stock, meaning the rims are original to the car, this is most likely a 240 GL. Based on my research, the GL trim level cars received the "Corona" style rims which you can see here.

I really hope the owner of this lot has all of these cars restored at some point, because they're really sitting on a gold mine of European classics. I know for sure plenty of people would happily take these cars!
