Volvo Spotting - Summer 2020
Here are some of the Volvos I found during the Summer of 2020. You can read more about these on my main car blog, Old New England Cars, but I felt it would make sense to include them here too. Afterall, this is dedicated to the Swedish Cars around Rhode Island and New England! As these are my first few stints with photographing cars, please forgive my poor quality as well.
June 2, 2020: 1990 Volvo 240 Sedan and a 1971 Chevy C-10 Stepside
You may need to look closely at this photo, but I assure you there is a Volvo 240 lurking in the background! I originally took this photo with the intent of capturing the '71 Chevy pickup you see in the foreground, but when I showed it to my friend Sam, he pointed out the 240 in the background! I totally would've photographed that car too, it must've just missed my eye...
July 18, 2020: 1988 Volvo 240 Sedan
This old Volvo is local to my neighborhood that I have distinct memories of growing up. This old beige brick has always been parked in this spot, or close by it, and never really seemed to change in appearance. It always had those crappy aftermarket hubs and a missing piece of trim or two.
At the time of this photo, this car was listed for sale on Craigslist, asking around $1050. Like the '86 Saab which you can read about here, I still kick myself for not acting on this one, although whoever bought it ended up trying to mod it out, failed, and ended up selling it. Maybe it had a few other issues, but I can't be sure. When I checked the car out, it seemed pretty solid, minus the cosmetic work it needed. For $1050, this car sure seemed like a good deal. I certainly miss when Volvos were this cheap.
August 7, 2020: Volvo 240 Sedan
This 240 is another local to my area, and is usually found lurking around the Cranston/Warwick, RI line. I see it around every so often, this time it was spotted on my way into work. This is in remarkable condition for a daily driver, and I'm glad its owner is keeping it up. At the time of the writing of this in 2023, I haven't seen it lately, but I may have seen a 240 with a similar plate in Providence. Who knows, maybe it relocated.
August 8, 2020: The Beige 240 Revisited
For posterity, I decided to photograph the beige brick again. This time you can get a better angle of the front. Like most old road-worn 240s, the front headlights had yellowed pretty badly.
